Drew represents one of over 80,000 people living in poverty in Alaska.

Drew is most likely under five years old; the poverty rate for children under five is about 1.5 times that of the poverty rate for the general population of Alaskans.

There is about a fifty/fifty chance that someone in Drew’s family will face a legal problem in the next twelve months, according to the estimate by the Alaska Supreme Court Equal Access to Justice Task Force.

Drew might live in Anchorage, which contains about one-half of Alaska’s poverty-level children, or might live in the bush, where poverty rates among children in proportion to the community population are much higher.

Wherever Drew lives, his family’s poverty exacerbates their legal problems.

His family may be denied Medicaid and he cannot get the new glasses he needs.

His family might be evicted based on an invalid notice; or the family’s current living quarters may fall below legal standards for safety and sanitation.

Perhaps Drew’s father’s wages will be excessively garnished, because the father doesn’t have the knowledge necessary to request an increased exemption amount.

Drew might be a chronic witness to one parent abusing the other, or Drew may need protection from abuse himself.

But Drew’s family can’t afford an attorney to address whatever the problem will turn out to be.

ALSC’s mission is to help Drew and the other 40,000 Alaskans whose families will need help with a legal problem this coming year, by providing legal assistance to those who most need it but cannot afford it.

We need your help in this mission.
