Many of the serious legal problems that impair the well being of low-income persons could be avoided altogether through the provision of timely and accurate legal advice and assistance.

Many of those impending problems, however, involve complex legal issues that cannot be effectively addressed without the unique expertise and experience possessed by the Alaska Legal Services.

A bit of sound advice and assistance at a critical time can prevent the accumulation of more serious, even life-threatening, legal problems; avoid litigation entirely; or even dramatically improve the quality of an individual's day-to-day life. In a very cost effective way, making legal assistance available to those who cannot afford it reduces the burdens on our judicial systems, and on our society.

But, although we help thousands of Alaskans each year, we must continue to turn away more than we assist. We lack the resources even to provide simple legal advice to many of those who seek it, much less legal representation to all of those already embroiled in litigation.

The result is a drain on the resources of our judicial and other dispute resolution systems, which in turn delays justice for others.
